In the badminton competition at the inaugural African School Games in Algeria, Team Nigeria finished with two gold, three silver, and one bronze, for a total of six medals. Precious Oluwagbotemi Adekunle won Nigeria’s first gold in the girls’ singles final, defeating her Egyptian opponent with incredible talent, speed, and tactical understanding. Edun David Damilare won Nigeria’s second gold in the boys’ singles shortly after, putting on a tough and resolute effort that won him the title.
The Adekunle sisters, Cynthia and Precious, put up a valiant fight in the girls’ doubles final but ultimately had to settle for a silver medal, adding to the family’s and Nigeria’s medal tally. In the mixed doubles final, Edun David paired with Cynthia Adekunle, and the duo delivered an impressive performance that earned Team Nigeria another silver medal.
The mixed team event of Ahmed Ayatulla and Masibau Faisat clashed with Tunisia in a closely contested semifinal. In the boys’ category, Nigeria’s Ayatulla secured a 3-1 victory. In the girls’ match, Tunisia triumphed 3-0 over Nigeria’s Faisat. While in the doubles match, Tunisia edged Nigeria 3-1. The aggregate score of 2-1 in favour of Tunisia meant Nigeria settled for the bronze medal in the mixed team category.
