The Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN) is proud to announce the outstanding success of Team Nigeria at the recently concluded 1st Abia International Para Badminton Championship and the Africa Para Badminton Championship 2025, both hosted by the Abia State Government in Umuahia, Abia State.

These historic championships brought together over 150 players from more than 20 countries across Africa, Asia, and South America, including India, Brazil, Peru, Egypt, Kenya, Benin, Cameroon, Tunisia, and others, marking a new dawn for para badminton in Nigeria and on the continent.

At the Africa Para Badminton Championship, Team Nigeria dominated the competition, finishing 1st overall with a total of 10 gold, 13 silver, and 17 bronze medals, ahead of Kenya and Egypt, who placed 2nd and 3rd, respectively.
In the 1st Abia International Para Badminton Championship, Nigeria also put up a stellar performance, finishing 4th overall with 3 gold, 5 silver, and 12 bronze medals in a strong field led by India, Brazil, and Peru.

The President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, Francis Orbih, Esq., commended the athletes, coaches, and technical officials for their resilience and dedication:

“Our para badminton players have once again demonstrated that ability outweighs disability. Their courage, skill, and passion on the court have brought pride not only to Nigeria but to Africa as a whole. Their performance in Umuahia stands as a symbol of hope and possibility.”

He also extended heartfelt appreciation to the Abia State Government under the leadership of His Excellency, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, for hosting both championships in an atmosphere of excellence, safety, and hospitality:

“The success of these twin championships is a testament to what visionary leadership and genuine commitment to inclusion can achieve. Abia State has written its name in gold as a home of sports development and empowerment for athletes with disabilities.”

The events, which spanned several days of intense competition, were not only about medals but also about boosting the local economy, inspiring young athletes, and showcasing Nigeria’s capacity to host world-class sporting events.

The BFN also acknowledges the support of the Badminton Confederation Africa (BCA), the Para Badminton International Federation, sponsors, fans, and the media for their roles in making the event a resounding success.

As the Federation looks ahead, it remains committed to building on this momentum, discovering new talents, strengthening training systems, and ensuring Nigeria continues to lead on the African and global para badminton stage.

Team Nigeria’s performance in Abia is not just a victory in sport; it is a victory of spirit, unity, and national pride.
