Nigeria’s superiority in Badminton in Africa was comprehensively established at the finals of Mixed Team Event on Sunday at African Games with a 3-0 clean sweep against Algeria.
During the semifinals at the morning session Algeria struggled to narrowly edge out South Africa 3-2 to advance to the Finals while the 2nd Semifinals, was between Nigeria and Egypt where Nigeria drubbed Egypt 3-0 to comfortably cruise to the Finals.
The Finals of the Mixed Team Event served off at 4:00pm and the first game saw the Mixed Doubles pair of K.Mammeri / Linda Mazri of Algeria who are the reigning African champions of the category offering a little resistance before being defeated 21-16, 18-21, 19-21 by the Nigerian top pair of Eneojo Joseph Abah and his wife, Peace Orji-Abah, who are ranked Africa’s Number Two Mixed Doubles pair.
Anuoluwapo Opeyori, Nigeria’s reigning King of African badminton, defeated Algeria’s Medel.Y.Sabri 23-21, 21-11 to make it 2-0 for Nigeria before the reigning Queen of Africa 2019, Dorcas Ajoke Adesokan of Nigeria trounced Boukhsani Halla 21-13,21-14 to complete the rout to give Nigeria a 3-0 win and the event gold.
It was an ecstatic moment for the Team, officials and especially for the President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, Francis Orbih,Esq. who has made it abundantly clear from his assumption of office as President, that it is one of the cardinal objectives to return the country’s badminton to the pole position it has so dominantly enjoyed in the past.
