AFRICA GAMES 2019: Africa Champions Nigeria Dominate In Morocco, Sets Up Semi Final Clash With Egypt

After three straight days of the Mixed Team Event, the Nigerian badminton team at the ongoing Africa Games in Casablanca, Morocco, consolidated it’s position at the top of it’s Group D, the only group with four teams.

The other 3 groups had 3 teams each, with teams playing only 2 games to round up the group stage.
Nigeria’s team had Zambia, Tunisia and Ethiopia with each team playing a total of 3 games to round up the stage.

Nigeria started by walloping Ethiopia 5-0 on Opening Day of the event. Zambia followed suit by thrashing Tunisia by the same margin.

Day Two saw Team Nigeria sailing effortlessly past Tunisia 5-0 with another interesting as well as intimidating scorelines in all the 5 events, while Zambia continued to follow with another 5-0 drubbing of Ethiopia.

This brought the 2 teams, Nigeria and Zambia at per with Day 3 clash to determine the Group Leader.
On Day 3, Team Nigeria beat Zambia in all events but one; the Men’s Doubles pair of Anuoluwapo Opeyori and Godwin Olofua, who are Nigeria and Africa’s top pair, lost narrowly to the Mulenga brothers, bringing the scoreline to 4-1 in favour of Nigeria.

With 14 points against Zambia’s 11, Nigeria led Group D to set up a meeting with Uganda in the Quarter Finals Knockout stage.

Other groups had varying degrees of fortunes with hosts Morocco, unable to advance after finishing 3rd in it’s Group B behind Mauritius and Kenya. Uganda came second in Group C with Algeria topping the group, while Egypt topped Group A with South Africa coming second.

The Mixed Team Event continued this evening, with the (knockout)Quarter Finals stage where Nigeria routed Uganda 3-0 to secure a Semifinals berth against Egypt and South Africa with the biggest upset so far, edged out powerhouse Mauritius to book a date with Algeria as semifinalists.

Semifinals are billed for today, Sunday 24th August in the morning while the Finals of the Mixed Team Event is scheduled for tomorrow evening.
