ALL AFRICA SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP – FINALS: Team Nigeria Have New King And Queen Of Africa Badminton

Nigeria’s contingent at the just concluded All Africa Senior Championship in Port Harcourt,  Rivers State emerge over all champions at the final set matches on Sunday.

In what has been an intense seven days of Badminton against Africa’s best players,  Dorcas Adesokan and Anuolwapo Opeyori – who are both the country’s number one player in both male and female categories delivered breath taking performances in their singles event to clinch Gold.

The finals which was graced by the executive governor of Rivers State, Dr. Nyesom Wike, Sports minister, Barr. Solomon Dalung and the state’s commissioner of sports, Hon. Boma Iyaye saw Dorcas Adesokan show class in her victory over current Africa number one female player, Kate Foo Kune of Mauritius in straight sets 21-12, 21-13.

Nigeria’s male singles sensations, Anuolwapo Opeyori and Godwin Olofua made it an all Nigerian affair in the men’s singles final after some top notch semi -clashes against Clement Krobakpo and Julien Paul respectively.

After a high tempo three sets, Opeyori by a close margin got the better of Olofua 21-17, 16-21, 21-17 to emerge as the new king of African Badminton.

The men’s doubles final saw the country’s duo of Enejo Abah/Isaac Minaphee taste defeat against Algeria’s Koceila Mammeri/Sabri Youcef in straight sets while in another all Nigeria final, the pair of Dorcas Adesokan/Deborah Ukeh emerged champions.

The mixed team event proved slightly, disappointing for the Nigeria duo of Enejo Abah/Peace Orji as they lost out against the Algerian young pair of Koceila Mammeri/Linda Mazri 21-23, 21-17, 21-13.

Team Nigeria on Wednesday won gold for the All Africa Mixed Team event with a nervy 2-3 victory of defending champions Mauritius.
